7 Steps to Designing Your Perfect Bathroom

Dreamy bathrooms can be so fun to design, but let’s be real – it can feel a bit overwhelming without a solid plan in place. Whether you’re going for a peaceful, spa-like escape or a chic, family-friendly bathroom, these 7 simple steps will help you create a space that’s not just beautiful but also works like a charm practically.

With our project at Carrajung Estate, we chose a blend of elegance and functionality, with products sourced from The Blue Space and below we share 7 steps to help you too turn that bathroom dream into a reality.

  1. Start with Your Room Dimensions

Before anything else, grab your tape measure! You need to map out the exact length and width of your space and mark down where your fixtures and fittings will go. Doing this to scale is crucial; it helps you understand how everything will fit together without any surprises. If you’re unsure about product sizes, here’s a general guide to standard bathroom dimensions.

For inspiration, check out the example plan we created for the bathroom at Carrajung Estate. Planning things out early ensures that your layout will work seamlessly.

  1. Find Your Inspiration

This is the fun part! Begin by gathering some inspiration for the overall look and feel you want. We recommend selecting three images that embody your design style—this makes it easy to spot patterns and preferences.

Once you have your theme, you’ll be able to see how these ideas translate into a cohesive design.

  1. Create a Moodboard

Moodboards are a fantastic way to visualise your bathroom. Use a tool like Style Source Book to layer all the tiles, fittings, and colours together. It helps you see how different elements interact before committing.

Here is a moodboard we created for the Carrajung Estate bathroom, featuring some amazing products from The Blue Space. This step allows you to really get a feel for how the room will look once completed.

  1. Order Samples

Never skip this step! Seeing products online is one thing, but lighting and space can drastically change how materials appear in real life. Whether it’s tiles, paint, or even tapware, order samples and check them out in the space you’re renovating. This way, you can be sure that everything complements each other.

  1. Draw Each Elevation

This is where the design details come to life. Draw out each wall, considering feature moments, clean lines, and where your products will go. It’s essential to think about the exact placement of items like taps, mirrors, and wall tiles. You can easily find product dimensions online to help you map everything out.

For the Carrajung Estate bathroom, here are some of the standout products we chose:

Freestanding Fienza Keeto Back-to-wall Acrylic Bath

Meir Shadow Rain Shower Rose

Meir Shadow Taps

Meir Gunmetal Kitchen Sinks

Palm Cove Grey Gloss Crackle Porcelain Mosaic Tiles

  1. Check Storage and Lighting

One of the most overlooked aspects of bathroom design is practical storage and lighting. Do you have enough room for all your essentials? Is there a spot for power points for things like your toothbrush and hairdryer? Great lighting can make all the difference, so don’t forget to plan task lighting over mirrors and ambient lighting for a more relaxing feel.

The more attention to detail you put into your plan now, the better the result will be!

  1. Work Out Product Quantities

Now it’s time to figure out how much of each product you need to order. For tiles, it’s a good idea to calculate about 20% extra to cover wastage or mistakes. Simply multiply your room’s length by its width and add that 20%. It’s always better to have a little extra on hand than to come up short.
