Start With a Clear Vision
Before you start tearing down walls or picking out new tiles, it’s important to have a clear vision for your renovation. Take some time to sit down and think about the changes you’d like to make, and why you want to make them. Are you looking to create a more functional space? Do you want to add more natural light to your home? Are you simply looking for a fresh new look? Once you have a clear vision in mind, it’ll be much easier to make decisions and stay focused throughout the renovation process.
With that vision we would recommend taking three images for each space, understanding the design intent/look and feel as well. There is so much that we are trying to achieve when we are setting out to renovate/extend or build new – the key here is to make sure you are clear on what you are trying to achieve.
Focus on One Area at a Time
Renovating your entire home can feel overwhelming, so it’s important to focus on one area at a time. Start with the room or space that will have the biggest impact on your daily life, and work your way from there. This could mean starting with your kitchen, which is often the heart of the home, or your master bedroom, where you begin and end each day. By focusing on one area at a time, you’ll be able to see progress quickly and stay motivated throughout the renovation process.
You may decide to stager the renovation and actually physically update each area one step at a time – this can work, but can also be more costly if you are calling trades back multiple times. However, when planning make sure you work through each area one step at a time to ensure that each space has been properly considered.
Incorporate Unique Design Elements
Your home should be a reflection of your personal style and interests, so don’t be afraid to incorporate unique design elements into your renovation. This could mean adding colour or texture to your walls, installing bold statement lighting fixtures, or incorporating a custom-built piece of furniture into your space. These unique touches will not only make your home feel more personalised, but they’ll also make it stand out from the crowd. At BuildHer, we like to know a person when we enter their home. We should see a correlation between you and the space that you are most comfortable in! Don’t be afraid to have fun and remember EVERY home will date to some extent, you are designing for you! Consider Sustainability
When planning your renovation, it’s important to think about sustainability. This could mean installing energy-efficient appliances, using eco-friendly building materials, or simply repurposing old items in creative ways. By making sustainable choices throughout your renovation, you’ll not only be helping the environment, but you’ll also be creating a more cost-effective and long-lasting home. Toxins and chemicals are another consideration – having lived in a home that gave me migraines from the off-gassing we are now much more particular about the products and processes used to create our spaces! And this is why we include the Happy Healthy Guide in our Build Like a BuildHer Course.
Hire a Professional Team
While DIY renovations can be fun and rewarding, it’s important to remember that some projects are best left to the professionals. Hiring a team of experienced renovators can ensure that your renovation is not only done efficiently, but also done correctly. They can also offer valuable advice and insights throughout the renovation process, helping you make the most of your renovation investment. Depending on if you want to just do a few projects or a larger renovation/extension you should consider hiring the appropriate design team – there are many, many ways to run a project and understanding your team is the first step. This article can help there!
