Hello stephanie from ireland!

Renovating a warehouse from “cow shed” to family home is no easy task, especially on the cusp of a global pandemic, but today’s guest Stephanie O’Sullivan made it happen.

In THIS EPISODE of the buildher podcast WITH stephanie o'sullivan

Stephanie and her partner started the search for their home, a house to call their own, with no intention of major building work or renovating. The property market in Dublin is highly competitive but they found that home in a commercial listing for an old warehouse.

Stephanie and Kribashini dive into the challenges and unexpected opportunities she encountered on that journey. She shares her experience of designing her home to suit the way her family lives and taking inspiration from the building’s original state. They also explore the way lockdown has affected their first year living in this home.

TOPICS WE COVER IN THIS BUILDHER PODCAST WITH STEPHANIE O'SULLIVAN:

  • [1:50]: Stephanie initially wasn’t intending on building but found their commercial unit while house hunting.

  • [4:30]: Changing the zoning was a painless process and it helped that Stephanie’s husband is an architect.

  • [5:50]: The potential they saw when they found out their warehouse came with a semi-detached cottage.

  • [9:00]: Documenting the entire house with a young family was really difficult and they eventually outsourced some of the work which was a huge help.

  • [10:50]: The nature of the site and the requirements for building automatically steered the direction of the layout.

  • [15:00]: They didn’t want to use a huge range of materials and chose to keep concrete and plywood as the main features.

  • [19:00]: Stephanie questioned everything to focus on the flow of the house and kept the mentality that less is more.

  • [22:00]: How homes have changed over time because values and the way of life has changed.
